Lakers Fall in Game 1, 89-78, to Raptors

The Lakers opened the 2014 Las Vegas Summer League with an 89-78 loss to the Toronto Raptors, getting a 21-point debut from second round pick Jordan Clarkson.

Julius Randle, L.A.'s highly-touted No. 7 overall pick out of Kentucky, watched the game in a polo shirt as he's yet to sign his contract with the team. Fellow SEC product Clarkson, however, helped get the Lakers within four points late in the third quarter before the Raptors pulled away.

Clarkson, selected with the 46th overall pick in June 26th's Draft after the Lakers purchased the pick from Washington, hit 7 of 15 field goals (46.7 percent), 2 of 4 triples and all five of his free throw attempts towards the 21 points. He added four boards, three assists and two steals in nearly 36 minutes of playing time. He showed an ability to break down his defender and get into the rim to create opportunities, and used his length to some effect on defense.

Kendall Marshall, who started 45 games for the Lakers in 2013-14, paced L.A. with five assists if only four points on 2 of 8 shooting, while Rodrigue Beaubois struggled in hitting only one of his five field goal attempts towards three points.

Tennessee Tech product Kevin Murphy added 16 points and a pair of steals off the bench, while Trevor Mbakwe out of Minnesota grabbed a team-high eight boards with a steal, a block and a big dunk as one of his 3 of 3 field goals (seven points).

As is often the case in summer league, both teams were sloppy, turning the ball over a combined 46 times (23 apiece), and committing 45 collective personal fouls. The Lakers shot 44.9 percent to Toronto's 49.1 percent, and were out-boarded 33-28.

Up next for the Mark Madsen and Larry Lewis coached team is a Sunday matchup against New Orleans, tipping off at 1:30 p.m.
