Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 9, the NBA announced today. The award comes on the heels of Klay Thompson’s win in the season’s opening week, marking the first time the Warriors have had two different players capture consecutive Player of the Week honors (Baron Davis earned back-to-back honors for the Warriors in April 2005).
In three games last week, Curry averaged 30.0 points (tied for first), 7.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds, 3.33 steals (first) and 4.7 three-pointers (first) in 36.0 minutes, connecting on 56.1 percent from the field and 51.9 percent from three-point range while hitting all 12 of his free throw attempts. The Warriors began the season with five-straight wins for the first time in 20 years (1994-95) and were the last remaining unbeaten team through five games for the first time since 1960-61, finishing the week with a 2-1 record.
Curry scored at least 28 points in all three contests last week, including a 34-point/10-rebound/5-assist performance in a road win at Houston on Nov. 8, the only 30-point/10-rebound effort by a guard this season. The six-year veteran tallied 28 points, 10 assists and five steals the following night in Phoenix (Nov.9), his fourth 20/10 game of the season (tied for the most in the league). Curry helped the Warriors open the week with a win over the Clippers by posting 28 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Through six games this season, Curry leads the league in points (27.7) and steals (3.50) to go with 7.2 assists (tied for eighth) and 6.3 rebounds in 34.8 minutes, becoming the first Warrior since Latrell Sprewell in 1994-95 to score at least 20 points in each of the team’s first six games of the season. The Davidson product, who has led the league in three-point field goals in each of the last two campaigns, currently ranks third in the NBA with 20 threes and has hit at least one triple in 75-straight games, the longest active streak in the league and fifth-longest all-time.
The award is the first career weekly honor for Curry, who has a pair of Player of the Month accolades to his name (April 2013 & April 2014). It is the 33rd time a Warriors player has been named Player of the Week since the NBA began giving out the award in 1979, making Curry the franchise’s 18th different player to earn the accolade.
Brooklyn’s Deron Williams was named Player of the Week in the Eastern Conference.
