Canada holds the Pac-12 assist record, dishing out 831 dimes in a Bruins uniform
NEW YORK CITY – The Seattle Storm added Jordin Canada and Teana Muldrow tonight in the 2018 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm, held at the Nike’s New York City headquarters.
“Jordin is a dynamic playmaker that will fit well in Coach Dan Hughes’ system,” said Storm President & General Manager Alisha Valavanis. “In addition to her offensive skill set, her defensive tenacity is invaluable. An excellent distributor, Canada leaves UCLA as the Pac-12 Conference and UCLA all-time assists leader, dishing out 831 dimes in her career. She set the program’s single-season record for assists with 248 in her senior season (2017-18) and averaged 7.1 assists per game in 2017-18, seventh-best in the NCAA.
“Jordin has a special skill with the basketball and at the same time defensively, is such an impact player,” said Hughes. “She gives us a spark on both ends of the floor with a high basketball IQ.”
Canada was the driving force behind the 2017-18 UCLA team that ranked in the top 10 all season, and guided the Bruins to three-straight NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in her last three seasons on campus, culminating in an Elite Eight appearance this season, the first for UCLA since 1999. Canada was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year following her senior season, the only Bruin to win the award since its inception in 2007-08. Her name is etched all over the school’s all-time record books; Canada leaves UCLA as the program’s second all-time leading scorer, pouring in 2,153 points in a Bruins uniform. She is third all-time in field goals made (768), second in free-throws made (518), third in steals (347), and fifth in most 20-point scoring games, hitting the mark 42 times.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Canada will join fellow UCLA alumnus Noelle Quinn on Seattle’s roster.
With the 29th pick, Seattle chose Teana Muldrow, a 6-1 forward from West Virginia University. One of five finalists for the 2018 Cheryl Miller Award, Muldrow had a standout senior campaign at West Virginia, averaging 18.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in 2017-18, all of which were team highs. She led the Mountaineers to the semifinals of the WNIT and garnered AP All-America Honorable Mention and All-Big 12 First Team honors.
A native of East Orange, N.J., Muldrow finished her career at West Virginia fourth in three categories, scoring, with 1,819 career points, rebounds, with 968 all-time, and field goals made, with 676. Muldrow capped her WVU career ranked in the program’s top 10 in 3-pointers made, blocks, double-doubles and games played. She averaged 22.0 points per game to lead WVU to wins over Butler (Nov. 23), Drexel (Nov. 24) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 25) for the 2017 Paradise Jam Island Division title, earning MVP honors of the tournament.
“Teana has had an outstanding career at West Virginia,” said Hughes. “Her rebounding ability, versatility, offensive scoring and her defensive development were very evident.”
Muldrow is the second-straight Mountaineers’ player to be drafted by the Storm, following Lanay Montgomery, Seattle’s 30th overall selection in the 2017 WNBA Draft.
The Storm tips off the 2018 slate against the Phoenix Mercury on May 20 during Opening Night presented by Swedish, with start time set for 6 p.m. PT at KeyArena. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a Sue Bird bobblehead to celebrate her league record-breaking assist last season at Washington, and her game-worn jersey from that contest will also be on display, allowing fans to take photos and capture a visual taste of WNBA history.
